I did promise you an update for last week on how our consultations with Yvonne went, but we had to delay the original date we had booked in due to varying workloads. However she made it in to see us all yesterday. She had a good chat with all of the team and then we had one to one sessions.
To start us off and sum up her beliefs and attitudes she showed us this great video created by Dr Mike Evans, which I think is a great way of explaining why exercise is so important when maintaing a healthy weight.
What Yvonne had to say to all of us made a lot of sense, drink lots of water; eat as much fruit and veg as possible, aiming for more than 5 a day; eat a good breakfast of porridge or quality wholemeal bread – surprisingly with proper butter. Yvonne recommends that you don’t eat processed foods, this includes butter like spreads and spreadable butter, diet foods, ready meals and anything in the centre of the supermarket – stick to the edges! She also advocates eating natural food and homegrown veg as more and more mass produced products don’t contain enough vitamins and minerals as they should, however not all of us have the space to grow our own, so try and eat organic where you can.
She had asked all of us to keep a food diary over the previous week so she could look at what we were eating and potential bad habits. A few of us got slapped wrists for eating processed and diet foods. Naughty GV team, we’re being much better today, so far I’ve had about 5 or 6 portions of fruit and veg. Me, Smug???
So if you want to be healthy, fit and happy in 2012 follow Yvonne’s suggestions above and walk more. But you only have to ‘be good’ 80% of the time, allow yourself 20% for treats, celebrations and when you really do deserve that (hopefully home made) bit of cake.
Let us know how you plan on being healthy in 2012, what tips have worked for you and if you’re starting a new exercise regime. If you want any advice on health or fitness browse out experts in the Health and Wellbeing section on the site.
I’ll update you all with how we all get on with our new lifestyle.
