Clogged Arteries (Arterial Plaque). Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood around the body. Healthy arteries have smooth inner walls and blood flows through them easily. However, clogged arteries can develop from the result of a build-up of a substance called plaque on the inner walls of the arteries. Arterial plaque can reduce blood flow or, in some instances, block it altogether.(stenosis)

Symptoms of ‘Clogged Arteries’

The condition is initially asymptomatic and develops slowly. The symptoms of arteriosclerosis may vary with different arteries involved.

The main symptoms can be:* Signs of inadequate blood supply generally appear first in the legs* Numbness of the legs or feet * Cold feet and cramps and pains in the legs, calf’s or feet even after light exercise* Loss of Hair on legs and feet: significant hair loss is seen with arteriosclerosis. * Stiffness and pain in the muscles.* Shortness of breath, a choking sensation,* Excessive sweating, * Nausea and vomiting * Cold or pale skin

What causes arterial plaque?

Plaque that accumulates on the inner walls of the arteries is made from various substances that circulate in the blood. These include calcium, fat, cholesterol, cellular waste, and fibrin, a material involved in blood clotting. In response to plaque build-up, cells in the artery walls increase and secrete additional substances that can worsen the state of clogged arteries.

As plaque deposits grow, a condition called athersclerosis results. This condition causes the arteries to narrow and harden.

Although experts don’t know for sure what starts atherosclerosis, the process seems to stem from damage to the arterial wall.

The body attempts to heal all of the damage, and under ideal circumstances it is able to do so without trouble. However there are certain nutrients that are needed to repair. If these nutrients are being utilised and absorbed then high homocysteine levels may develop and damage cells that line the veins or arteries which in turn stimulates the development of scar tissue in the damaged area.

The Importance of Vitamin B12

Homocysteine is a toxic amino acid formed in the body when normal body processes break down other amino acids in the blood. High blood levels of homocysteine have been linked to a higher risk of heart and vascular disease, and are considered even more of a threat to heart health than high cholesterol.

Increased homocysteine levels maybe caused by stress, poor diet, smoking, heavy metal toxicity, elevated blood fats, medications, and lack of vitamins B12, vitamins B6, folic Acid and excess iron (Excess iron deposits and the presence of iron pigment (hemosiderin) granules are the hallmark of chronic vascular disease. Iron deposits from red blood cell protein (haemoglobin) accumulations trigger an immune response. Hemosiderin is present in the brain lesions of MS.

Essential Nutrients for High Homocysteine

Vitamins B6, B12 (Methylcobalamin) and Folic acid are key nutrients and may help convert homocysteine to other substances, thus preventing an unwanted build up of homocysteine. These must be obtained from food or supplementation because, like other vitamins, the body cannot make these essential substances from other nutrients.

Deficiencies of these vitamins lead to a build up of homocysteine that damages the cells and tissues of the arteries.

Vitamin B12 Absorption

Absorption of Vitamin B12 in the diet is difficult if you have MS because the digestive system needs a protein called intrinsic factor and people who have a less than optimal gastrointestinal digestive system are not able to absorb it. It is therefore recommended that people with MS take it as a sublingual (under the tongue) nutrient. Ideally you should take around 100 to 300 mcg of Vitamin B12 per DAY. There is a ‘Homocysteine spray’ that is sprayed into the mouth as a liquid and is absorbed directly into the bloodstream bypassing the digestive system. Or you can take B12 as a ‘sublingual’ tablet that dissolves under the tongue.

How to prevent ‘restenosis’ of arteries

A recent study shows that a regimen of folic acid 1mg plus vitamin B12 400mcg and Vitamin B610mg daily can decrease the rate of restenosis in patients treated with balloon angioplasty. But this combination does not seem to be as effective for reducing restenosis in patients after artery stenting.

Antioxidants to strengthen blood vessels

Antioxidants are important to reduce inflammation and to strengthen arterial walls. When the body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals (by-products), which can cause damage. Antioxidants act as "free radical scavengers" and hence prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals.

Antioxidants are found abundant in beans, grain products, fruits and vegetables. Look for fruits with bright color - lutein in some of the yellow pigments found in corn; orange in cantaloupe, butternut squash and mango; red from lycopene in tomatoes and watermelon, and purple and blue in berries.

Vitamin D to reduce Arterial Stiffness

Vitamin D can suppress vascular calcification. It promotes smooth muscle growth and is anti-inflammatory.

How to ‘unclog’ arteries naturally

Proteolytic enzymes (or proteases) refer to the various enzymes that digest (break down into smaller units) protein. These enzymes include the pancreatic proteases chymotrypsin and trypsin, bromelain (pineapple enzyme), papain (papaya enzyme), fungal proteases, and Serratia peptidase (the “silk worm” enzyme).   • Garlic is a wonderful remedy to treat and prevent arteriosclerosis. You can take garlic supplement, or eat fresh garlic. Take a few cloves of garlic daily, it clears arteries, the circulatory system, helps bringing down the cholesterol level in blood, and collects and cast out toxic waste present in the bloodstream.
  • Lemon or Orange juice helps to treat arteriosclerosis. Using lemon peels or orange peels is even more effective than drinking the juice. Here is how to use lemon peels or orange peels:
